E-commerce giant Amazon today declared setting up of seven new distribution centers otherwise known as Fulfillment Centers in India, a move that has made 1,200 new employments. These FCs will provide large appliances and furniture like air conditioners, air coolers, refrigerators, washing machines and TVs.
“We have seen phenomenal growth in the Large Appliances & Furniture categories and expect huge customer demand for products such as ACs, air coolers, and refrigerators during the summer. The category has seen nearly 200% growth in the last one year and grew 5X of daily volumes during our last sale event held in January. Our new FCs will enable customers in 20 cities to receive their products the very next day and we will continue to expand our reach to offer an unparalleled shopping experience.” Manish Tiwary, Vice President, Category Management, Amazon India said.
Earlier Amazon India has invested $5 billion in the Indian market and they already have 27 such warehouses across the country. With the expansion of the new FCs, Amazon will have 34 FCs across 10 states. The new FCs will be opened in nine states including Karnataka, Haryana, Telangana, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
Amazon India has set up 33 delivery stations to take care of the demand it is seeing. "We have set up a dedicated infrastructure of nine FCs and 33 exclusive delivery stations that will ensure faster and reliable delivery of large appliances and furniture to more than 150 cities. The facilities set up by us will also open up 1,200 job opportunities in captive and contract roles across the various stages of supply chain and delivery. We are currently focused on fulfilling the orders through Amazon with the FBA model," Amazon India Vice President India Customer Fulfilment Akhil Saxena said.
The new distribution centers will empower Amazon India to make quick deliveries as it confronts extreme rivalry from internet shopping monsters like Flipkart and Snapdeal.
