The US based fast food chain Uno Pizzeria & Grill has tied up with the Kolkata-based Dhanukas of the Dhunseri Group to enter the Indian market. Uno Pizzeria and Grill is best known for its thick-crusted Chicago style pizza. Initially the Dhanukas will invest Rs 30 crore in the project.
The group has signed a franchise agreement with the food chain to open about 70 outlets across the country over the next seven years. Each outlet will be of 2,500-3,000 square feet with the interiors same as of any other Uno Pizzeria & Grill restaurant in the US. The first few of these outlets will be set up in the Delhi NCR NCR by the end of this year which will be followed by Kolkata.
Tastetaria, subsidiary of Dhunseri Petrochem will expand and operate the Uno brand by opening outlets. "We will start with full service dine-in restaurants on prime locations to establish the brand in the country. More formats in the smaller category will be added later," chairman of Tastetaria Pvt Ltd, Mrigank Dhanuka said.
Frederick Houston, Vice President, Franchise Operations, Uno Pizzeria & Grill, said, "India is a market with huge potential for pizza and pasta lovers. We will now have the opportunity to present the Uno brand proposition to consumers with our own local twist to the menu. Our menu will offer only 60-70 dishes against 140 dishes being offered in the US restaurants. In India, our pizza and pasta offerings will be followed by more options on burgers and appetisers." Further to this Houston added that apart from a full service dine-in, express (smaller menu) and kiosk (food courts in malls) formats will also be explored.
In India, pizza industry is dominated by Domino's and Pizza Hut and is growing 8-10 per cent annually. According to Houston the success of these international brands encouraged the US firm to explore the Indian market.
